Artist Statement – Lisa G. Moore

My quilts are vessels of memory — stitched from repurposed textiles, layered with history, and bound by love. As a heritage quilter, I use fabric not only as material, but as a medium for storytelling. Each piece I create is rooted in the desire to preserve personal family stories and honor significant historical moments that shape our collective identity.

Working with worn cloth, old garments, and passed-down scraps, I reimagine what was once discarded into something sacred. These fabrics carry the weight of lives lived — fingerprints of a grandmother’s apron, the faded threads of a work shirt, or the softness of a baby’s blanket — all brought together in a visual archive of memory and resilience.

Inspired by the legacy of my ancestors and the traditions of African American quilting, my work is an act of cultural preservation. I quilt to remember. I quilt to witness. And I quilt to ensure that the stories we carry are not lost, but passed down — one stitch at a time.
